earthquake in Tibet
Magnitude 7 earthquake in Tibet, 16 dead, 65 injured. It seems like a very light toll, but Tibet is sparsely populated.
That Al Jazeera article doesn't have a lot of information, so I had a look at The Beijing News.
Combining the two, it looks like the earthquake struck in around about this area.
Quick summary of what Beijing News has:
16 dead
65 injured, of whom 11 are seriously injured and the remainder lightly injured
As of 10am 23/10 local time, 12,489 people have been evacuated. Authorities are setting up tents for them.
Affected towns and villages are scattered quite widely apart, some up to 40 or 50 kilometres away from each other.
A firefighter in Gangqie Township (sorry, can't find the Tibetan spelling) is quoted as saying one person was killed in a rockfall while they were trying to escape. Eight others were injured.
Telecommunications were cut and some roads were affected by rockfalls, but at present telecoms have been restored and roads are opened.
One rescue worker said that most local houses are single-storey buildings made from wood and rammed earth - wooden framework and roof with rammed earth walls. Other houses are made from stone or brick.
Baqen County Middle School (巴青县中学) managed to evacuate its 1400 staff and students within two minutes, no casualties. School buildings are showing cracks in the walls.
I've found Xinhua's English-language reporting to be not very helpful, but they do have this article about relief efforts and resources being sent to Nagqu - note Xinhua uses "Xizang" for "Tibet".
It's still very early, and I'm sure there will be more reporting coming.
