earthquake in Tibet, updates
Following on from yesterday's post. There's a little bit more in The Beijing News today about the earthquake in Tibet. Not a lot, but a little bit.
This article says nobody is missing, deaths still at 16, now 76 injured. 339 houses collapsed or damaged, 20 livestock enclosures (barns, etc) damaged. Rescuers have been going house to house, searching thoroughly to account for everyone.
This article looks at the risk of secondary disasters. The affected area has an average altitude of 4800 metres above sea level and nights get cold. There is still a risk of rockfall, landslide, and snow or black ice accumulating on shaded stretches of roads. These obviously all pose risks to both rescuers and locals. People are being sent out with rescuers to assess conditions and close off dangerous areas, and tents for the rescued are being set up well clear of dangerous mountainsides and buildings.
